What it promises
The figure describes a property of cloth: how much ultraviolet radiation passes through a fabric in a laboratory measurement. It is a rating of the material, expressed as a number, and besides one weight and one water pressure it is the only measured figure printed anywhere in this catalog.
Who measures it, and under what
Measured
This one is genuinely measured, and both halves of it are published. AATCC lists a test method for the transmittance or blocking of erythemally weighted ultraviolet radiation through fabric among its standard test methods and procedures. ASTM publishes D6603, a standard specification for the labeling of UV-protective textiles, which governs how such a figure may be presented on a label. Five listings in this catalog use UPF wording. Three of them print 50+, one prints 50, and one prints the letters with no number after them. None of them names the test method behind its own figure.
What it does not promise
- It does not promise warmth. A rated fabric can be, and in this catalog usually is, extremely thin.
- It does not promise anything about a person. The rating is a measurement of cloth and this site says nothing beyond that.
- It does not promise that the figure was produced under any particular method, because none of these listings names one.
- It does not promise coverage. A rating applies to the fabric, and a garment covers whatever it covers.
